Jesse On the Issues
Property Taxes:
Jim Zay says the County has “held the line” on property taxes. But a flat or declining tax rate doesn't necessarily mean a flat tax bill as property values and the County levy change. Voters deserve to know what DuPage homeowners are actually paying—not just the rate.
$6 Billion Water Project:
As DuPage Water Commission chairman, Zay is advancing a Lake Michigan water project. Initial cost estimate: $3.5 billion. Now estimated at up to $6 billion, while an independent engineering review warned costs could reach $8.3 billion. Residents deserve a clear financing plan and projected water rates before billions are committed.
$185,000 Board Chair Salary:
Zay voted in committee to increase the future County Board Chair's salary to $185,000, an increase of more than 35%, with additional increases through 2030. The meeting record also identifies him as the seconder when the amended compensation ordinance advanced.
Who Set the Pay Raise?
When the new elected-official salaries were developed, County Chair Deb Conroy publicly identified Zay as the Board's “senior-most Member” who helped craft the options presented to the Board.
Stormwater Claims:
Zay's campaign continues to tout more than $50 million in District 6 stormwater projects, including Bartlett, Carol Stream and Warrenville. But records show that number to be far less during his current term. That makes a straightforward accountability question appropriate: how much of that work and funding actually occurred during his current term, rather than over his decades in office?
27 Years in Office:
Zay was first elected to the County Board in 1999 and describes himself as its longest-serving member. After 27 years, voters can compare his current promises with the record accumulated during that time.
